The Detroit Coalition Against Police
Brutality
THE OFFICIAL STATEMENT
GIVEN IN SUPPORT OF DR. CATHERINE WILKERSON Released by The Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality on
May
1, 2007
It's unfortunate when a medical professional can't intervene in the
attempt to save the life of any person who is experiencing a
medical
emergency.
The attack and detaining of Dr. Catherine Wilkerson is abhorrent and
vicious and it reflects a growing trend o n the part of campus law
enforcement
officers against the people they are sworn to protect and serve.
We propose greater control and sanctions against campus law enforcement
which supersedes the authority of the Board of Regents. We urge
the
Regents to exercise their elected authority to penalize the Department
of Public Safety and its officers when they injure employees, students
or citizens.
It would have been negligent of Dr.Wilkerson to have ignored the need
to assist an individual in a medical crisis. She should have been
awarded a citation and proclaimed a heroine, as opposed to facing legal
sanctions.
This is just another form of police brutality and The Detroit Coalition
Against Police Brutality stands with Dr. Wilkerson, her defense
committee
and her attorney.
For more information on how you can get
involved or make a contribution to Dr. Wilkerson's legal defense fund,

Committee's work is supported by the Nationals Lawyers Guild, Detroit
& Michigan Chapter; Council on American Islamic Relations, Michigan
Chapter; and, the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality.
